A man with an Antillean background walks into a shop and puts his bag in a locker. He does this because he was asked to the last time he visited. He notices, however, another man walking into the store with a bag. When the man asks the security officer if the locker rule is no longer enforced, the security tells him: “No, not at the moment.” The man responds by saying he would also like to keep his bag with him into the store. The security officer asks if he is Antillean and tells him that he will keep an eye on him to prevent any theft. According to the security officer, the man acts like an Antillean.
Mediation by the Meldpunt Discriminatie Regio Amsterdam
The man feels unequally treated and offended. He reports the incident to the Meldpunt Discriminatie Regio Amsterdam. After the intake meeting at our office we initiate a mediation meeting with our client and the security officer’s supervisor. In that meeting it turns out that the security officer has already been warned for his behaviour towards customers. Eventually, the security officer apologises to our client and is transferred to another company.
