Our annual report shows the number of reports registered by the MDRA in 2018 for the municipalities of Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Aalsmeer, Diemen, Uithoorn and Ouder-Amstel. The main findings are:
Origin
As in past years, origin is the ground of discrimination on which the MDRA receives the most reports. In 2018, this ground even concerns more than half of the number of reports. There were relatively many complaints about descent in the field of media and advertising in 2018 (33, compared to 17 in 2017). Of these, 23 related to a lifestyle program broadcast on TV through a commercial broadcaster. In that program, offensive statements were made about people with frizzy hair.
Gender
The number of reports related to the gender discrimination ground increased to 72 in 2018 (2017: 53). This includes reports on unequal treatment of transgender people (15 reports). Almost half of the complaints on the ground of gender (35 reports) relate to the labor market. This picture is consistent with 2017 (53 reports, of which 32 were about the labor market area).
Religion - Muslim discrimination
The number of complaints of Muslim discrimination fell to 26 in 2018 (2017: 42). The MDRA believes that in reality, the number of incidents has rather increased. Therefore, the MDRA wants to ensure that discriminated Muslims know how to better find the MDRA.
Sexual orientation
The number of reports on the ground of sexual orientation increased from 25 in 2017 to 45 in 2018. 40 of the 45 reports are about discrimination against gay men.
Labor Market
In 2018, labor market was again the area on which the most reports were received. As in 2017, in 2018 the grounds of origin (54) and gender (35) were overrepresented among the 134 reports in this area.
Hospitality/entertainment
The number of reports about the area hospitality industry increased to 40 in 2018 (2017: 21). The increase mainly relates to reports about door policy. On these, the MDRA received 23 complaints in 2018 (2017: 9).
